Dean graduated from Auckland Medical School in 1999. After successfully graduating from the New Zealand Orthopaedics Association’s advanced surgical training programme he was admitted as a Fellow of the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons in 2009.
Dean underwent extensive subspecialty training in spine surgery at both the Spinal Unit at Royal North Shore Hospital in Sydney and at the British Columbia Children’s Hospital in Vancouver, Canada. He has also spent a year in practice as an Adult Spine Surgeon at Wellington Public Hospital.
Dean has interests in all aspects of spinal pathology and treatment, both operative and non-operative. He performs procedures on lumbar, thoracic and cervical spine pathology such as microdiscectomy, instrumented fusions, ACDF, and laminoplasty.

- treatment and management of conditions of the cervical spine:
- Cervical disc protrusions
- Cervical spinal stenosis
- Cervical radiculopathy
- Myelopathy
- Conditions of the lumbar spine:
- Lumbar spinal stenosis
- Sciatica, lumbar disc protrusions
- Back pain
- Disc protrusions
- Paediatric and adult spinal deformity including spondolythesis, scoliosis and kyphosis
- Spinal trauma.
